development and Business and Social Sciences. Hard copies of journals are well
over 300 titles with several volumes, both local and foreign, arranged on
artistically well built steel display racks and over 20,000 electronic journals
across various disciplines accessible from our online databases. The serials
section subscribes to Five (5) daily and Two (2) weekly newspapers, Four (4)
local and Five (5) foreign magazines. It operates open access to its collections
to maximize user satisfaction. The
need for a good newspaper and journal indexing in academic libraries is very
imperative, this is owing to the fact that users of these libraries constantly
refer to newspaper and journal back files and most times in a hurry. This has
compelled the serials section to embark on newspaper and journal indexing since
our goal is to meet, as fast as possible users information needs. Right now all
our journal and newspaper articles are online and searchable in the library’s OPAC. This has helped in building the confidence of users in the ability of the
library to meet their information needs. To further enhance the worth of the
serials section, modalities have been set in place for SDI (Selective
Dissemination of Information), where the users’ research profiles are matched
with available resources, and the delivery of photocopied content pages of
materials relevant to their research needs. The
library, according to S.R. Ranganathan is a growing organism. To this end,
subscriptions are renewed annually for existing titles and orders are placed for
new ones. Presently, some new titles running into several thousand volumes have
been shipped from the United Kingdom and are billed to arrive any moment from
now.
