INTRODUCTION

Friday Faculty Fellowship is a weekly innovative interactive forum created by the University to build up the intellectual and spiritual capacity of its faculty members as well as keeping them abreast of current trends of issues and events within and outside the University. The Chancellor, Dr David Oyedepo and other Principal Officers of the University, who are regular speakers at the Fellowship, use the forum to mentor and impact their rich wealth of experience on the faculty, especially younger academics.

EXPLORING THE IDEA OF A UNIVERSITY

Dr. David Oyedepo

As we begin to explore what a University represents, I will like to say that a University is a place where solutions to societal problems are found and value is added to humanity. A University is not a monastery but a factory that produces values and drives research. The real value of a university is only established by the problems it solves. In order to be relevant as a University, we must continue to engage in research that will solve the problem of the society. As long as we remain regimented we will continue to be relegated. There’s a need for a rediscovery of our true identity because wherever there is liberty, dignity is restored and it doesn’t have to be white to be right. Let us rush in to maximize the opportunity of this dark hour in Africa to the original ideas of creating knowledge, solving practical problems, being committed to developing products and keep exploring new vistas in our various areas of endeavour both morally and socially.    Read More

With about 78 approved universities in Nigeria - 26 Federal, 26 State and 24 private universities, of which Covenant University is one, it becomes necessary to address what the idea of a university in the 21st Century is, particularly as it relates to the African context. Beginning with the very first universities in the 15th century,...  Read More

Setting the Records Straight

THE IDEA OF A UNIVERSITY
By Professor Tim O. Mosaku Department of Building Technology

Introduction
The concept of a University from historical perspective and its traditional ideas gives one the impression of a big-bang theory in creating an environment which is distinct  from the society it is meant to serve. The emphasis appears to be more on the individuals within the environment who are given the freedom to develop their own intellectual capacities and to develop  others to make free and voluntary contributions for the benefit of the society.

Whatever came out of the university in this manner for the benefit of the society therefore was left to chance depending on the way the individuals within the environment perceived their environment and, of course, the status of their intellectual capacities. Some of the early discoveries and inventions adopted or adapted for societal needs provide ample examples to confirm this view.  Read More
