The Dynamic Nature of Society & the Issue of Relevance
Universities remain meaningful because they respond to the deepest of human needs, to the desire to understand and to explain that understanding to others.
Need, therefore, for universities to "redesign, repackage, and sell their products" in response to shifting consumer priorities.   Read More

THE IDEA OF A UNIVERSITY
Professor C. O. Oluwafemi

THE EARLY STAGES
………….(Eleventh and twelfth centuries)

A resurgence of studies, mainly in medicine, law and theology occurred at a number of European cities (significantly at Bologna, Salerno and Paris).

Profound scholarsticism in the schools soon attracted privileges from the Church and the state( including some measure of academic freedom) .

Significantly, in the last quarter of the twelfth century three schools in France "unived to form a university” – The University of Paris.    Read More

THE IDEA OF A UNIVERSITY
Professor Cyril S. Ige
Department of Economics and Development Studies

I. INTRODUCTION:
The idea of a university has a very long history as we know, dating back to the medieval times, gaining recognition in the renaissance, which the reformation enhanced much greatly. This was mainly a European event that later spread to other parts of the world including the Americas. Like most objects of civilization its purveyor was the Church around which the ideology was weaved and gained currency.
The idea of a University came to Africa through colonialism and contact with Europe. Surprisingly this was the same Africa that brought writing to the world through Egypt that was to have the university experience only in the 19th century. One could assert that the university system is still taking route and shape in Africa in terms of what it has helped Europe and other parts of the world to achieve. Up till 2006, even the United Kingdom was still in a quagmire on what purpose its university education should serve.

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENT CALLED DUVA
(the idea of a university)
Presented by Prof. O. Solanke April 20, 2007

The main theme of today’s submission is still “the idea of a university” while the sub-theme is “Academic performance measurement instrument called DUVA” Let’s take the main theme and peep through the window of advanced syllogism of Aristotle – a Greek philosopher(384-322 BC):
“the ‘idea’ of a university”; is
the ‘concept of a university, which is
the “thought about thoughts" of a University, meaning
                                                 the “proposition”of a University

The proposition of a university has long been settled. It was settled with the world first University established at Bologna 800years ago. The concept of a university in our context is how to build a university of our own and to put Covenant University on the world map as a first class University. The truth is that.  Read More

MY IDEA OF A UNIVERSITY
Presented By Professor Joseph Abiodun Bello, HOD, Business Studies
Covenant University.

A CONCEPT OF A UNIVERSITY
As a pioneer in Business Administration, my concept of a University has three dimensions: Hardware, Software, Orgware.
Hardware
It is a production thorough-put with basic material, technical, social infrastructural, informational, components. A physical entity dominating a space dedicated to knowledge production, knowledge distribution, knowledge sharing, and knowledge acquisition by vested stakeholders. A citadel of learning, teaching, research, and communicating of relatively original findings in recognized Journals and Books. Read More

Introduction
My early idea of what a university is was formed in connection with Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, long before I became an undergraduate there. At the time, I was attending one of the prestigious Catholic Mission Schools known as St. Mary’s College, Kisubi, also in Uganda. Dr. Watson, an elderly lecturer at Makerere University, used to drive a distance of 20 km every Sunday morning to Kisubi to conduct the service for students belonging to Church of Uganda’s Anglican Communion.   Read More

INTRODUCTION:
The term “university” has a longstanding history. The first university appeared as far back as the fifteenth century with the formation of the University of Paris and the University of Bologna (1150AD). In this 21st Century, emphasis is placed on the university’s role in disseminating and advancing knowledge through scholarship and research. Universities are designed to cater for change in an increasingly ‘knowledge-based’ society.  Read More

The Traditional University
by Prof. Emmanuel N. Kwofie
January 26, 2007

For a fuller presentation of my view of the traditional university, it would be necessary to provide an account of the evolution of universities throughout the world. Apart from the fact that that would be a daunting task, there is no time for such an enterprise here. (For those interested, I provide the following reference: Encvclopaedia Britannica vol. 18 (macropaedia) 2005 pp IH- 90: "History of Education").   Read More
