Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers Honours Degree in three programmes.

These are:
Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering
Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Manufacturing Engineering

Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Materials Engineering

The duration of the degree programmes in the Department is five years of ten Semesters.

JUSTIFICATION FOR THE PROGRAMMES IN THE DEPARTMENT

The trend in the world today is to design and produce. However, a curriculum in Mechanical Engineering alone cannot serve this purpose. There is an interaction between design and materials selection as well as between design and manufacture. When the curriculum for these programmes are brought together under one department, they will be able to enrich each other and the interrelationships between them brought into proper focus for the benefit of the graduates and advancement of knowledge in general. Also, with these programmes in place, the University will be able to produce men and women who will not only be able to design, but have sufficient and adequate knowledge and know-how to make the design a reality in terms of being available for the purpose for which it has been conceptualized and designed. If a machine or product is designed and it cannot be manufactured, then it does not exist.
