INTRODUCTION The Department
of Electrical & Information Engineering offers Honour degrees in three
programmes namely: Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Computer Engineering,
Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Electrical & Electronics
Engineering, and Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in
Information & Communication Technology.
The duration of each of the
degree programmes in the Department is five years of
ten semesters. Nine semesters of course works and
laboratory practical are spent in the university.
The long vacation of twelve weeks between 200 level
and 300 level is devoted to SWEP (Student Work
Experience Programme) in the workshops in the
university. The SIWES
(Student Industrial Experience Scheme) is a period
of six consecutive months after alpha (1st) semester
of 400 level which is spent in industries. As a
result of the commonalities existing among the three
programmes, the first three years, that is 100, 200,
300 levels, are 100% common to the three programmes.
JUSTIFICATION FOR THE
PROGRAMMES IN THE DEPARTMENT
In the electromechanical age,
electrical engineering as a discipline was
monolithic. The name Dept of Electrical Engineering
was adopted by Universities offering the programme.
Then came the era of microelectronics which
broadened the discipline to electrical and
electronic engineering; and Dept. of Electrical &
Electronic Engineering became the order of the day.
Computer age followed and it became fashionable to
have Dept. of Electrical and Computer engineering.
The new realm now is an Information age and in order
to cope effectively with industry’s labour demand it
is
imperative to design programmes and curricula to
meet this demand. Hence, the new nomenclature of
Dept. of Electrical and Information Engineering; and
the programmes offered in this Department. |
