BRIEF HISTORY

Covenant University is a missionary and Visionary Institute whose mission is to raise a new generation of leaders. Covenant University was given an operational license by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) to operate as a private university in Nigeria on Feb. 12, 2002.

Covenant University started its academic programme in October 2002 under three colleges namely: College of Business and Social sciences (CBS), College of Human Development (CHD) and College of Science and Technology (CST). Each College has various Programmes being run under them. The College of Science and Technology (CST) has Architecture as one of the professional programmes offered under it.

HISTORY.

The present Department of Architecture offers two programmes Architecture and Building. However the Department started in the 2002/2003 academic calendar as Department of Environmental Sciences offering programmes in Architecture and Estate Management. The administration of the department in 2002/2003 academic year was under the headship of the Dean of the College CST as the University was still out to recruit the best crops of academics to run the programme.

Dr Adedeji Daramola resumed duty at the beginning of the 2003/2004 academic year as the acting head.. Since resumption of duty he has worked together with the University management in line with the mission of the University to chart a new course of raising new generation of leaders in the architectural profession. The former Department of Environmental Sciences was spitted into Department of Architecture and Estate Management in the 2004/2005 academic calendar due to the astronomical increase in student enrolment for the programmes.

The Department of Architecture has been marching on and taking giant strides in producing a new generation of architects that will provide leadership for the decadence in the profession and chart new courses for architectural practice in the nation.

STAFF STRENGTH/STUDENT POPULATION:

At the inception of the architecture programme in year 2002/2003 academic year there were 3 academic staff with a pioneering student population of 42. The 2003/2004 academic session had a new intake student population of 54 registered students with staff strength of 7 academic staff. The 3rd year architecture programme witnessed an increase in student enrolment for the two programmes offered in the Department. Architecture – 69 and Building – 12. The academic staff strength has also increased from 7 in the previous academic year to 10 in the 2004/2005 academic year with Prof E. A. Adeyemi joining the department as a full time staff. In 2005/2006 academic year 57 new students were admitted with astronomical staff strength (full time) of over 20 including four Visiting Fellows of Architecture.

In addition to this, some allied/science lecturers from other programmes came in to take some courses. In line with the vision of the University of developing a new generation of leaders the a number of Assistant lecturers of the Department currently registered for PhD programmes under full scholarship by the university

NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES COMMISSION (NUC) ACCREDITATION

In March 2005, the National Universities Commission awarded a 5* Full accreditation to the Department of Architecture at its first presentation. This was quite encouraging.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

In 2004/2005 the department won a covenant University Senate Research Grant amounting to N968,000 to carry out a study on the ‘TRENDS OF ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE IN NIGERIA SINCE 1960. The study has taken researchers to a number of architectural firms in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. The final report is currently being concluded.

Budget

The Department of Architecture currently runs a 100% budget approval. In which case all the budget of the Department for 2003/2004, 2004/2005, and 2005/2006 sessions are fully implemented.

National/International Conferences

The department has a full funding that allows its staff to embark on both national and International conferences at full sponsorship. Quite a number of its staff have benefited from this In 2005, the department presented a paper at the African Union of Architects (AUA) triennial conference held in Abuja. In July, 2005, the department was also represented at the Triennial conference of the UIA (International Union of Architects), a World Congress of Architecture in Istanbul, Turkey – Asia where a paper was also presented. The department has been very actively involved in both national and international activities of the professional bodies.

Innovations

The Department of Architecture is working in collaboration with the staff of Covenant University project in exposing her students to continuous practical experiences of building construction stages on site simultaneously with the academic work. In line with this each student is attached to a construction site from where they are expected to report in their log books, detailed report of activities on site on daily basis. This report is countersigned by the site Architect. This is to expose them to on the job practice knowledge of building carrier which will give them a better understanding in their design studio and thus enable them handle greater challenges. This invariably offered them an edge over their counterparts elsewhere.
