Introduction

Originally based in the Department of English and Literary Studies, the French unit became a separate Department during the 2006/2007 academic session. The Department offers a 4-year programme of eight semesters leading to the award of a B.A. Honours Degree in French (Studies). The programme comprises courses in French language and literature, the culture and civilization of France and of other francophone areas of the world but particularly of Africa.

Every student of the French degree programme is expected to spend one academic year or two consecutive semesters at the Nigeria French Language Village, Ajara, Badagry on an immersion programme after four consecutive semesters of lectures and language laboratory work at Covenant University.

The Department also offers courses in French to students of other Departments, such as English and International Relations. GST122: Communication in French is taught to all 100 Level students.

A Proficiency Certificate and a Diploma in French programmes of one-year duration each are offered as well.

The requirements for admission to the B.A. French programme are as stated in the relevant section of the University Handbook while the details of the Certificate and Diploma programmes may be obtained directly from the Department.
