CU Community Development
Initiative
Covenant University has commenced
a series of community development services aimed at
impacting positively on the lives of people in its
host community, Ota and its environs.
The services which range from environmental
sanitation, beautification, construction of
amusement parks, entrepreneurial skills acquisition,
among others, are coordinated under the umbrella of
Covenant University Community Development
Initiative. The programme is part of deliberate
efforts by the University to inculcate the spirit of
leadership and responsibility-citizenship skills in
its students through the platform of community
service.
The first phase of the programme kicked off on
Saturday, June 3, 2006, with the graduating students
embarking on environmental sanitation within the
streets of its host communities- Ota, Sango and
their surroundings. The students, numbering about
800, also went out on Saturday June 10, 2006 to
strategic locations within Sango metropolis,
especially areas where the Local Government
Authorities had earlier identified as neglected with
high level of refuse dumps. The students with the
support of some heavy-duty, earth-moving equipment
provided by the University were able to rid the
city’s motor park and some other major spots of
refuse, some of which had been dumped as far back as
two years ago.
The programme, since inception, has continued to
attract high commendations from the indigenes of the
area who have openly expressed appreciation to the
University Management and the students for such
novel community service. The Local Government
Authorities on their part have not only expressed
appreciation but also indicated their willingness to
collaborate with the University in that regard. The
Director of Water Supply and Environmental
Sanitation in the Council, Elder Pius Afuwape and
his team visited the University to ascertain the
areas in which the Council could be of help during
the exercise.
