GENERAL OVERVIEW OF ACTIVITIES
According to the Chancellor, “Covenant University is a
royal academy birthed on the platform of a compelling vision to raise a new
generation of leaders for the Continent of Africa. It is indeed the birth place
of “kings and queens”.
One of the mission of the University is to develop an integrated,
life-applicable and life promoting education. In addition, the mission is
essentially to liberate mankind by promoting the relevance of University
education and focusing on human development with the ultimate goal of creating
an environment that could foster a Total Man who will be relevant to his or her
world in his purpose.
Covenant University is declared a dream centre
i.e. ‘the
dream varsity’; where students are expected to quickly catch a dream that
gives value to the acquired talents and skills. It is indeed a man’s dream that
provides a defining mark for his life style, making him a responsible
individual, who takes delight in complying with laid down rules and regulations.
Our students are expected to be most disciplined of any such student you would
ever meet. The mental orientation of the royal status of our students is
expected to rule their life styles, thereby keeping them focused on the throne
ahead of them.
Only a serious approach guarantees a glorious result, we are therefore very
passionate in the Student Affairs Department in our destiny-moulding mandate.
The genuine commitment of our students to the pursuit and actualization of their
dreams in order to become solution providers calls for high level discipline.
From the above, the relevance of the Student Affairs Department of the Covenant
University as one of the components towards the realization of the Liberation
mandate of Living Faith Church cannot be over emphasized.
In order to facilitate the realization of the major objectives of the Commission
for setting up Covenant University, the Student Affairs Department has the
responsibility of attending to all issues that affect students on campus.
It is essentially the primary objective of the University that students are
processed and consequently made Kings and Queens for the benefits of the
society.
Towards this effect, the major activities of Student Affairs include the
followings:
|
|
(1) General Oversight of halls of residence: This is to ensure that students
live a life of dignity without unnecessary challenges.
Leadership of Covenant University has provided full residential facilities for
all students. Therefore, the responsibility of allocation of students into the
halls of residence is vested in the Department of Students’ Affairs. Presently,
there are Ten (10) Residential Halls in the University. Each of the Ten Halls
has two hall officers who apart from maintaining law and order also provide
guidance services in their various Halls. The believe of leadership of royalty
for the status of living of our students has led to the mandatory one man one
bed space philosophy driven by the Department; no squatting is allowed, neither
is swapping of bed spaces permitted.
(2) Discipline: The department regulates Students conduct and discipline. Each
student is given a copy of student handbook which contains the guidelines for
students’ expected conduct on campus and the penalties for their violation.
These guidelines put in place are a set of rules and regulations called the
‘University Royal Law’ designed to help every student to enjoy a successful
tenure here at Covenant University.
Every decree enacted in Covenant University is designed to groom and not to
grieve. None of the regulations is put in place with the sole intent of
punishing but to tailor towards polishing our products, the students. These
guidelines range from alignment to proper dress code and conducts during
examinations to policies on residency. The essence of this is to ensure that
students’ moral character and conduct are molded in a positive way.
The high demand placed on discipline as a fundamental requirement for making a
total graduate as embedded in the core values of Covenant University makes it
imperative to pursue it with the required doggedness. Towards this end the
followings have been our focus:
o Monitoring of Students at
the Halls of residence as well as the Academic Areas (Colleges and Library
Buildings) and the Chapel.
o Mentoring of students through the process of
training that would enhance passing down of desired values, culture and skills
that would culminate in their becoming the total Graduate.
To power this effectively, the following crop of Staff and
Students are adequately used:
Hall Staff (Officers &
Assistants)
Students Representatives at the following
levels:
• Apex Students’ Body
• Halls of Residence
• Colleges & Departments
• Revolutionary (Disciplinary) Squad
Virile Security Personnel
(3) Student Associations: The Students Affairs is responsible
for the registration of all students’ associations on campus. The aim is to
encourage and allow students to express themselves and cross fertilize ideas.
(4) Sporting and other activities: The department in its commitment to
realization of the development of Total Man Concept (TMC) has organized series
of sporting programmes. Students are also made to jog within the university at
regular interval. The aim is to ensure an emergence of a fully-baked Covenant
University student.
(5) Enhancement of Welfare: Enhancement of the quality of students’ welfare is
very pivotal to the attainment of desired excellence of high quality leadership
from our Kings and Queens. Towards this end attention is given to all issues
bothering on their total well-being vis-à-vis the areas of maintenance and
improvement on the very good accommodation that are presently available, medical
services, feeding and cafeteria services. The following strategies are adopted
for the accomplishment of this goal:
i. Reliable Surveillance Team comprising of both staff and students
ii. All the stake holders in the King making process, especially the Faculty
Staff
iii. Entrenchment of the values and virtues of “being our Brothers’ keepers” in
all our students.
(6) Counseling and Training: The department also provides counseling
opportunities with the collaborative efforts from the Faculty aimed at helping
non-conforming students to align as appropriate. This cover wide area such as
academic, spiritual, personal and career counseling.
Reigning in life requires training; hence our quest for excellent leadership is
anchored on training. Therefore, efforts are geared towards the provision of
regular training programme for all the students and their leadership as well as
the staff responsible for grass-root monitoring. To achieve the type and quality
of leaders expected of our students, the Chancellor recently commenced a
leadership summit training programme with the graduating set.
(7) Students Council: The student Affairs also supervises the activities of the
Student leadership on campus known as Covenant University Students Council (CUSC).
Their functions among others include:
(a) To bridge the gap between the University Management and the student body.
(b) To interpret and monitor the enforcement of University rules and
regulations.
(c) To encourage creative initiatives and create a campus public opinion through
which healthy students’ views are permitted to be expressed for a meaningful and
responsible campus life.
(8) Core Values: The department ensures strict adherence and visible
demonstration of the University Core values. The Core values are Spirituality,
Positive mentality, Capacity building, Integrity, Responsibility, diligence and
sacrifice. These Core Values are the fabrics around which the culture of
Covenant University revolves. They essentially point to the reliability of the
future of the University as well as our products.
As a department, we ensure that we always exhume these values in our day to day
operations as ‘you cannot give what you don’t have’.
(9) International Students’ Unit: The Department has an International Student
Affairs Unit coordinated by a member of Faculty and it is part of the Student
Services aimed at administering all matters related to the welfare for
international students in Covenant University. This is in furtherance of the
global mandate of the Commission. As such, the unit is an important contact
point for international students studying at the university. Advice and
assistance available through the unit includes matters regarding student passes
(application, renewal, cancellation and queries) and hospitalization, medical
inquiries, application for admission procedures and orientation programs. The
unit refers to the appropriate department or support service, issues they are
unable to readily handle. Most importantly, our International Students are
encouraged to seek for help when in need of such.
The International Student Affairs Unit also encourages and assists with
intercultural activities that promote understanding between Nigerians and
international students. |
